About Waterloo Elmwood Cemetery

Founded in 1853, Waterloo Elmwood Cemetery has served the community for over 170 years as a peaceful and dignified final resting place. Originally established by a small group of local residents, Elmwood has grown into a nonprofit organization dedicated to compassionate care, responsible stewardship, and honoring the legacy of those who helped shape Waterloo’s history.
Today, Elmwood remains home to many of the city’s founding families and veterans, with traditions like Memorial Day flag placements by Scout Troop 144 helping to preserve those legacies. The cemetery’s dedicated staff and board continue to improve the grounds with thoughtful updates, including a welcoming new entrance, planned section signage, and a forthcoming kiosk to help visitors navigate more easily. An upgraded website will soon offer burial listings, a cemetery map, and seasonal updates.
As a community-supported nonprofit, Waterloo Elmwood Cemetery relies on the generosity of individuals and families to help maintain and enhance its beauty. Contributions in memory of loved ones—such as trees, benches, plaques, and more, ensure that Elmwood remains a serene and meaningful place for generations to come.
